Baba Marta

On March 1st, Bulgarians celebrate an old tradition called Baba Marta. The tradition consists of giving family and friends a red and white interwoven string known as a Martenitsa which is to bring health and happiness. The Martenitsa are attached to trees upon seeing the first storks of the year.
